HERITAGE, MAPPED AND REMEMBERED
A digital atlas that brings Barroso’s ancient hillforts to life, preserving memory, celebrating identity, and connecting community through technology.
Project Challenges
The main challenge behind Atlas dos Castros do Barroso was transforming centuries of archaeological knowledge into an engaging, intuitive digital experience. The platform needed to serve both specialists and the general public, making complex data accessible without losing historical accuracy or visual coherence.
Another key challenge was integrating geographic data and storytelling seamlessly. The team had to design a system capable of handling multiple layers of spatial information (archaeological sites, trails, and routes), while maintaining performance, usability, and aesthetic integrity.
Finally, the platform had to be sustainable and easy to manage for the ERA Arqueologia team, who required a flexible CMS and a scalable architecture for continuous updates and future expansion.
Solutions
Buzzvel partnered closely with ERA Arqueologia to design and develop a web platform that unites storytelling, cartography, and heritage preservation. Built on WordPress, the site benefits from a modular content structure, allowing editors to easily update texts, images, and datasets without technical dependency. This flexibility ensured that the platform could grow alongside ongoing archaeological research.
To bring the landscape to life, Mapbox was integrated for its dynamic and high-performance mapping capabilities. The custom-designed interactive map lets visitors explore each Castro, switch between views, follow ancient routes, and uncover stories tied to the territory. Combined with a warm visual language inspired by Barroso’s stone textures and earthy tones, the experience feels grounded and authentic.
Under the hood, GeoServer powers the system’s spatial data infrastructure, managing complex geospatial layers and serving them efficiently to the front end. The combination of WordPress for content, GeoServer for data management, and Mapbox for visualization created a robust and future-proof ecosystem where history and technology coexist in harmony.
Throughout the process, the design team focused on contextual storytelling and accessibility, ensuring that every user, whether a local resident, a student, or a visitor, could navigate and engage with the region’s archaeological heritage in an immersive and educational manner.
Results
The Atlas dos Castros do Barroso redefines how cultural heritage is experienced online, turning simple maps into meaningful narratives and ancient landscapes into interactive journeys. The platform allows users to explore the Barroso region freely, from satellite views to detailed archaeological profiles, uncovering history in their own way and pace.
For ERA Arqueologia, the project established a living digital archive that both preserves and promotes local heritage, strengthening community identity while opening new opportunities for cultural tourism and research.
By combining design, storytelling, and spatial technology, Buzzvel helped transform Barroso’s archaeological legacy into a dynamic digital experience. One that bridges past and present, memory and excitement.
